Woburn Welcomes Police Chief Brian McManus
Chief Robert Rufo Retires After 42 Years of Dedicated Service
Woburn, MA – The City of Woburn, is honored to announce the appointment of Deputy Chief Brian McManus as the new Chief of Police for the Woburn Police Department, effective August 15th, 2025, following the retirement of Chief Robert Rufo.
“I am grateful to Chief Rufo for his 42 years of exceptional service to the Woburn Police Department. Chief Rufo leaves a legacy of leadership, integrity, and selfless service to our community. We wish him the very best in his well-earned retirement. I am pleased and proud to appoint Brian McManus to take over what is widely regarded as one of the finest police departments in the Commonwealth. Newly-appointed Chief McManus has the education, experience and credibility to effectively lead our police department into the future. As Deputy, he has worked closely with Chief Rufo and is well-prepared for a seamless transition,” said Mayor Michael Concannon.
Over the years, Chief McManus has garnered widespread respect in Woburn and beyond for his integrity, his work ethic, and his commitment to constantly improving. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Administration, and holds a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Geographic Information Systems.
Chief McManus has been with the Woburn Police Department since December 2000. With more than two decades of experience, he has served as Patrolman, Detective, Detective Sergeant, Vice/Narcotics Unit Supervisor, Commander of the Southern Middlesex Regional Drug Task Force, Detective Lieutenant and most recently as Deputy Police Chief. Prior to his career in law enforcement Chief McManus served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps.
The City of Woburn extends its heartfelt gratitude to Chief Rufo for his years of service and offers its congratulations to Chief McManus as he assumes command of the police department.
